Stock photos

Stock photos, here’s what you need to know!

If you take photos of off Google, you may end up with a nasty surprise. The international stock photo agency Getty Images is known for intensive hunting of unpaid stock photos on websites. This can result in sky-high additional charges for those who use the visual material unlawfully.

What are the rules on stock photos and how can you save money?

You can not just download photos from the internet and use them on your website. In fact, copyright is on all photos. So if you put a downloaded image on your own website you can get into a lot of trouble. There are, however, ways to find the rightful claimant so that you can request permission. A handy tool for this is TinEye. This allows you to search on which websites a photo has been published. So in many cases, you will find the rightful claimant. Usually, you have to pay a fee for the use of the photo. Always look at the website where you take the picture from what the general conditions say about the copyright.

Free licenses

On the internet, you can also find images that you can use for free. You call this Copyleft. A well-known form to offer photos and other creative works more freely is the Creative Commons license (CC). These licenses consist of the code CC, supplemented with one or more codes. These are the Creative Commons codes:

2. Non-commercial

Non-commercial (NC) means that the copying, distribution, display, and performance of work and derivative works may be for non-commercial purposes.

3. No Derivative works

No Derivative Works (ND): copying, distributing, displaying and executing the work is permitted, but not changing the work

4. Sharing alike

Share Alike (SA): the distribution of derivative works is only allowed under an identical license, see also copyleft.
